It’s great to be active again!
As many of you know, I was completely immobilized after back surgery in 2004 which triggered an agonizing “whole body” flare-up of my arthritis that lasted for several months.
I was couch-bound and gained 35 pounds. Even worse, this inactivity led me to the brink of heart disease and diabetes. (Read my story here.)
I learned the hard way that there’s plenty of truth in the old saying: “Once you stop moving, you start dying.”
My book ARTHRITIS INTERRUPTED (co-written with Dr. Stephen Sinatra) tells how I reversed my arthritis — and saved my life in the process.
Growing Old Isn’t for Sissies
Now that I’m back to my super-active self (I cycle, lift weights, do yoga regularly, plus hike and jog), I have to deal with the assault of muscle pulls and sports injuries that seem to pick on us seniors — plus the stress and tension of running a website and a publishing company fulltime.
After a certain age, staying fit is more of a challenge because of injuries. We’re more likely pull or strain muscles than when we were younger. (Last week I made compost all afternoon and really felt it in my back the next day.)
But unlike most people my age, I don’t take anti-inflammatory pills like Advil or ibuprofen to relieve my aches and pains. (That’s because these drugs block the body’s cartilage-repair process and actually accelerate joint deterioration.) I can’t afford that!
These days, my two best friends for healing my muscles are Boericke and Tafel’s Sports Gel for Trauma and the tiny hand-held wonder, the Mini-Masseuse Pro.
Boericke and Tafel’s Sports Gel Is Pretty Amazing Stuff
A few months ago I strained a deltoid muscle lifting weights and it just wouldn’t heal. In fact, everything I did seemed to aggravate it more (cycling, yoga, push-ups — even picking this year’s crop of cherries).
When my wife noticed my discomfort, she brought out her well-worn tube of Boericke and Tafel’s (she’s from Europe and relies on a variety of homeopathic remedies).
After just two applications, I noticed a marked improvement. And two days later I was back to normal.
I’ve tried a bunch of muscle creams in the past (Traumeel, arnica, etc.), but nothing works as well. I’m really impressed.
We buy Boericke and Tafel’s Sports Gel at Whole Foods, but it’s available wherever good quality homeopathic remedies are sold. Keep a tube on hand — you won’t regret it.
How Electricity Can Heal Your Body
My newest healing helper, the Mini-Masseuse Pro, really comes in handy for more serious injuries. It’s like having a physical therapist on call 24/7.

This palm-size electrical muscle stimulator (EMS) is as powerful as the big machines used by sports clinics, chiropractors and professional trainers, but it’s far more affordable.
The principle is simple. You just attach two adhesive terminals to the injured or stressed area. Mild electrical current is passed through the muscles causing them to contract and release at any intensity you choose. (You can actually see them jumping up and down under your skin.) |
These high-speed contractions pump blood and nutrients to the injury and speed healing — so you’re back in action sooner. (According to my Google research, EMS has even helped paralyzed patients walk again — which is pretty amazing!
How I Found Out about It
I learned about the Mini-Masseuse Pro from our friend Pamelyn who suffers from long-term back pain that usually requires strong painkillers. Here’s what she wrote to me:

“I love this device and have had it for years. I used to suffer from constant lower back pain and had to take Aleve nightly. Now instead of popping pills, I rely on my Mini-Masseuse.
It’s easy to use, convenient, and gives me drug-free relief. The unit fits in my hand and the stimulus pads are discreet enough to wear under my clothes (so I can treat myself at work or driving in my car). I give myself a treatment before going to bed almost every night … and now I’m able to enjoy pain-free sleep. |
It’s also an unbeatable value. With physical therapy treatments running anywhere from $95 to $125 dollars per appointment, the Mini-Masseuse paid for itself in less than two days. And I never again have to take time off work to visit my chiropractor.
I still have to take an occasional Aleve — but those are days when I’ve had a super-strenuous workload and ‘overdo it’. I bet I’ve reduced the need for pain-relievers by 90%.”
A Relaxing Massage Anytime You Need One
And if chronically-tense muscles have you uptight, these EMS-generated contractions also loosen and relax them as if you had a professional massage.
Martina (my Energizer Bunny wife), is regularly attacked by intense tension headaches that torture her for a period of three days. Mysteriously, they appear about every two months — but can also be brought on by stressful events, such as when we’re preparing to travel.
On our last cross-country flight, she packed the Mini-Masseuse in her purse and was able to relax her pain away on the plane. (This was a big relief for me too, because it usually takes me hours to massage the knot out of her trapezius.)
Two Things I Love about Writing for MyHealingKitchen.com:
I love my job.
Every week, members send me recommendations for their favorite “healing products”
– and I get to personally research and test them.
Not all of these pass muster (and some are real duds) — but the ones that truly impress me get my full endorsement.

And the Mini-Masseuse Pro has my “thumbs up.”
Give it a try and see what you think. If you’re not 100% satisfied with it, send it back within 90 days for a full refund on your credit card. |
And I’ll personally make sure you get your money back.
Sounds very good. My friend has back pain a lot and it sounds ideal for him. But what is the cost please?
Barbara: The Mini-Masseuse Pro is $119 USD.
how dose this device differ from the MICRO DOCTOR?
I wonder if it could help with my venous
insufficiency ?
That’s what I was thinking too. Would it be useful for poor circulation in my feet, a problem for Type 2 diabetics or so I have been told. I walk fairly regularly, but a lot of my work is done seated. Anything to keep the circulation going!
I came across “The Pain Genie” developed by Russian Scientists to heal the Astronauts in space. Great for any muscle or ligature problems. The Home ‘Scenar’ is easy to use.
Keep moving is right! One becomes stiff just sitting! I feel so much better when I exercise. Now if I could exercise and loose weight..I guess its called discipline! Thaanks for your info!
Gwei-hua balm from E.Excel Int’l. Is great for muscle aches and pains or bruises. It’s also a good rub for chest congestion, sore throat–you can also swallow it. Put on tooth for tooth ache, rub on insect bites etc.
Always keep a sm jar handy especially if you have kids. Just keep out of eyes– will burn eyes, so wash hands after use.
Plant based ingredients, like Menthol, GUI Hua flower, Eucalyptus, peppermint oil, Camphor, clove leaf oil, etc. and drug free. Pleasant but strong minty smell. I always kept in my purse when my son was young, now I keep on bed side table.
Very interesting stuff.. I want to share with you what I use to help with muscle and joint pain.. it’s called Wobenzym PS.
It is a combination of enzymes, when taken away from food,
help decrease and/or inhibit inflammation.
I also give my 56 lb. 13 year old black lab mix, one a day, and it has helped him to be able to avoid limping after exertion( in the past, if he ran a bit to play with other dogs, he would limp for 2 or 3 days)
It’s important to take the PS kind of wobenzyme.. it’s stronger than the regular one.
Best wishes to you and your wife
Being Type II diabetic I get very bad leg cramps and I have tried everything until in desperation, I tried a remedy a nurse told me about. I unwrapped two bars of Ivory soap and put them under the bottom sheet at the bottom of the bed and I have not had a problem in 5 years! I believe that other soaps work but I am afraid to try them.
I have been on a group of pills for years, including the Statin meds and I was a biabetes patient at the VA. I started to take the COQ10 several months ago and since Thanksgiving I went from 276 lbs down to 225 lbs and my blood sugar is a little below norman. By the way, I am 69 years old.
About 5 years ago, I built my elderly mother two patios – lifting bags of sand, square stepping stones, etc. I pulled every muscle in my shoulders and suffered for months. Couldn’t find a comfortable position to sleep, hurt to reach out and pick up a glass even. Then I remembered a personal trainer talking about the value of push-ups or push-aways as an exercise for our upper body -especially the shoulders. Started small and built up. almost immediate relief! Now I do push aways (from the wall) regularly and no more problems.
Jim, I have taken your advice in the Arthritis Interupted book and cut the starches and sugars out of my diet. I also found that I was taking only half the amount of EFA’s I needed, by reading your book.
I also eat three cloves of raw garlic and two tablespoons of EVOO, washed down with 2 or 3 ounces of red wine, between lunch and supper. The garlic must be thoroughly masticated, to get the full benefit. Some folks may find that a little uncomfortable as raw garlic has a bite to it. The garlic does wonders in lowering the BP though. Mine is 120/70 now. In Jan. at the Dr’s office, it was 168/98!
One meal a day, either breakfast or lunch consists of the Budwig protocol, I eat 1/2 cup of 1% cottage cheese blended with 2 tblsp of Flax oil and some fruit, usually blueberries, strawberries, pineapple or a banana.
I can’t believe how great I feel! I have also lost over twenty pounds in the last four months. I am 71 years old and 5’10″, and now 175 lbs. I haven’t weighed that in 30 years. I had been plagued with OA in my low back, neck, left ankle and wrists/hands for the past 25 years. I am now virtually pain free, and have my 34 inch waist back, which I thought I would never see again, it was 40″. I can actually bend over now and tie my shoes again without exhaling and holding my breath while doing so.
I was taking NSAIDs for years to fight the pain so as to keep working and became a “couch potato” for six years after retiring, due to the constant pain. I am now very physically active once again. Your book has been a great help in my regaining good health. Thank you. Winfield
I buy my milk in 1/2 gal. containers and it is a bit more than I can get through before if goes sour. I then remembered that my grandmother on our east Texas farm would put a silver dollar in the milk container that we stored in the icebox. The icebox kept the milk cool but not cold and the silver retarded the growth of bacteria that soured the milk! Remember to take the dollar out of the container before you throw it away because silver dollars are very expensive now!
Stephen, very glad to hear of your results. Please tell us what quantity of CoQ10 you took daily to accomplish this feat?
Jim, My Mom had a stroke January 1st and has been left without a lot of use in her right hand. Do you think the Boerick and Tafels Sports Gel might give her some relief from the arthritis she has in that hand? Thanks
Dear Trisha,
Yes, I do think it would help her, along with eating arthritis healing foods. Also, make sure she eats a lot of ginger and curcumin root.
Stay Healthy!
Jim H.
