Cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) is delicious in pesto, salad dressings and as a dipping sauce for artisan bread. People in Mediterranean cultures have been enjoying it for centuries, and they are among the healthiest people on the planet. Science now tells us that olive oil eases painful joints as well as drugs, but without the joint-damaging side effects.
1. EVOO surpasses Ibuprofen for pain relief. Here’s more great news for easing arthritis pain. Research shows 50 milliliters of EVOO (about 3-1/2 tablespoons) taken every day produces the same pain-relieving effect in your joints as a 200-mg tablet of ibuprofen.
2. Unlike ibuprofen, EVOO does not damage joints. The pain relief in pills often come with unintended side effects. Multiple studies show that non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen actually damage joint tissue when used over time. One such study published in the prestigious Lancet found the worst hip joint deterioration in osteoarthritis sufferers who relied heavily on NSAIDs.
Acetaminophen doesn’t damage joints, but it is still dangerous. Acetaminophen poisoning has surpassed hepatitis as the top cause of acute liver failure. Play it safe and rely on EVOO for long term pain relief, and only resort to drugs — if you must — for short term flares.
3. Buy cold-pressed “extra virgin” olive oil. To get maximum health benefits from olive oil, buy the freshest, least processed olive oil you can find — that means cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil. Buy small quantities in a dark bottle. Keep bottles cool, out of the light, and tightly capped.
