Broccoli Builds Bone

Chomp on broccoli for arthritis relief! Its massive dose of vitamin K is a blessing for sore joints. That little known vitamin slows joint deterioration and is suspected to be crucial for rebuilding bone and cartilage. Broccoli also has a decent dose of dietary calcium, which helps prevent bone spurs.

1. Vitamin K prevents and slows osteoarthritis. Broccoli and other cruciferous veggies are stunning sources of vitamin K, with 1 cup of broccoli offering  194% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA). According to a study published in Arthritis and Rheumatism, an increase in vitamin K helps lower the risk of osteoarthritis (OA) in hands and knees by a whopping 40%.

2. Vitamin K may be essential to healthy bone formation. Studies suggest that Vitamin K boosts the action of proteins that build and strengthen cartilage and bone. This makes it essential for the constant reconstruction of worn cartilage and bone that happens in healthy joints. Vitamin K also seems to reduce the pain-triggering inflammation in joints, while enhancing the ability of cartilage to withstand wear and tear.

3. Calcium: broccoli’s big bonus. Contrary to popular thinking, the calcium deposits found in OA are not caused by excess calcium but by a lack of natural dietary calcium.  When calcium levels are low the body steals calcium from your bones, but it often takes too much.  This excess calcium can build up in the joints, hindering motion. This is where calcium-rich broccoli is so beneficial. One cup contains 10 percent of your daily need for calcium.

4. Always buy organic. Organic broccoli and other cruciferous veggies contain more healing power than conventionally grown produce. Studies show that organic produce has 27% more vitamin C, 29% more iron, and 14% more phosphorus, on average. Organically grown broccoli has higher levels of all its healing plant nutrients than conventionally grown broccoli.

5. Enjoy broccoli’s cruciferous cousins. Other members of the family include cabbage, kale, cauliflower, turnips, collard greens, watercress, bok choy and radish. All of these worldwide traditional staples of the winter garden offer remarkable arthritis relief because they are loaded with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant substances, including sulforaphane, vitamin C, vitamin K, beta carotene, selenium, calcium and the outstanding natural pain-reliever salicylic acid (SA).
