Arnica is one of many supplemental treatments for arthritis inflammation that are considered “alternative” by the medical establishment. But this doesn’t mean it is inferior to pain-relieving drugs!
Arnica is a plant that is native to mountainous regions of Europe and North America. It’s also an ingredient in the popular homeopathic cream Traumeel and other creams and gels used for joint pain, inflammation, bruising and swelling. Rigorous testing has shown that arnica contains anti-inflammatory properties and is a potent alternative pain-reliever without the dangerous side-effects of most arthritis drugs. A recent study out of the University of Zurich found that topical application of arnica cream is a “viable alternative to ibuprofen gel when treating osteoarthritis of the hand joints.”
While the American medical system (doctors and insurers) do not recognize homeopathy as a legitimate treatment option, homeopathic treatment is covered by the public health service of several European countries, including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Luxembourg. The Indian government also includes homeopathy as a part of the national health system and homeopaths are considered medical professionals. When your joints are hurting, it is safe to consider arnica cream a soothing and effective choice.
