Good brain health relies on effective digestion and circulation. Ginger to the rescue! Ginger has been used as a medicine and healing food for thousands of years in China, India and Arabia to treat arthritis, digestive problems and heart conditions. It serves as a potent brain-protecting food as well.
1. Ginger prevents free radical damage. Ginger contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols. Japanese research found that gingerols inhibit the production of nitric oxide, which quickly forms a very damaging free radical called peroxynitrite. If left unabated, peroxnitrite inflicts oxidative damage on the cells of the body and brain, but ginger prevents this from happening.
2. Ginger soothes your tummy and boosts your immune system. Problems with the immune system and digestion can lead to elevated blood sugar and chronic inflammation, a risk factor for cognitive decline and memory loss. A study published by the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that ginger stimulates digestion and soothes the stomach.
3. Warm up your brain with ginger tea on a cold day. Simmer slices of fresh ginger root in water for 20 minutes, then add honey and lemon and a dash of cayenne. Delicious! And healthy, too. Fresh ginger contains more of its potent phytonutrients than dried, but dried will do in a pinch.
